About the film
Family film from the nineties
"The message that children's dreams
have many forms and children need to be
supported."
It is 1998, the tournament of the century is about to culminate in Nagano, Japan. The Czechs are winning and a crowd frenzy is breaking out. Adults regain their almost lost national pride. All the little kids want to be like Jarda Jagr or Dominik Hasek. Dom is among them. An 11-year-old dreamer and a boy from a broken home. He clings to his new idol.
Dom really wants to play hockey, but his parents don't have the money. And they doubt their son's ability. So on his grandfather's advice, Dom and his friend Honza start a hockey team. They name it "The Sabres", just like Hašek's home club in Buffalo.
The team, made up of disparate, underrated kids, begins working on a big challenge. To beat the Red Wings team from the next village and earn respect. After an initial debacle, the Sabres are taken over by the peculiar coach and father of Honza, Karel (Hynek Cermak), a former major league hockey player. Everything is gradually heading towards a rematch.
Our film is a tribute to the achievements of Czech hockey players and pays homage to the legends. We convey the message that children's dreams take many forms and that children should be supported.
At the same time, we raise the topical issue of children and sport, because supporting children's movement needs to start with the family. This is also one of the key messages of the whole film Children of Nagano.
